PET plastic is a widely used packaging polymer for bottles. Most PET plastics are used for various purposes, such as PET bottles that can be used to contain water or oils, vinegar, detergents, and household chemicals. The popularity of PET bottles stems from their optical transparency, moderate water vapor transmission rates, and low oxygen and carbon dioxide gas transmission rates. (PET Flakes clear mixed light blue, hot washed)
In recent years, the use of recycled PET in bottles has increased largely in Europe as solid state post condensation (SSP) became available to ensure the food safety of the PET material, and the environmental benefits of using recycled PET instead of virgin PET for bottles, became increasingly accepted. With the increased usage of PET in bottles, several technical downsides also became more apparent, such as the reduced optical transparency and their more grey and/or yellow colors. The term haze is used to refer to the reduced optical transparency of PET, and the colors of PET are often measured with the CIELAB method. ( See more: PET Bottle Regrind )
Besides the optical downsides of PET, some beverage-producing companies claim that the incidence of mechanical bottle failure, as evaluated by environmental stress cracking (ESC), is higher for PET bottles with recycled content. However, this has not been reported in the literature. In contrast, the mechanical properties of PET sheets have been reported to be insensitive to the recycled content levels although they were highly degraded when exposed to chemical reagents.
PET recycling is a successful industry
PET packaging is recycled into plastic fibers that are then sold to suppliers who manufacture various products. This recycled PET (rPET) is used to make plastic vehicle components, clothing, textiles, and more packaging materials. Clothing and footwear account for one of the largest market segments for rPET; just under 15% of all rPET is used to manufacture polyester fibers for clothing and shoes.( See more: PET Sheet )
Post-consumer PET packaging and beverage bottles are also recycled into new plastic bottles, plastic sheeting, and thermoformed punnets for food. rPET is the only recycled material that can be used in food-contact applications because it is 100% non-toxic and will not contaminate food and drinks with chemicals.
What are the properties of pet plastic?
- The most important characteristic of PET is its viscosity
- Plastic-shaped PET is capable of being hygroscopic. If the process is wet, the hydrolysis will take place at the surface of the water and the pet resin, which will affect the viscosity. So before we process it, we must remove the moisture off the plastic.
What is the application of PET resins?
Most PET in the world are used to synthesize fibers (60%), about 30% are used for bottled water, and 10% are used for other items to meet global demand.( See more: PET Bottle on bales )
In the field of pet fibers used as polyester as a binder with cotton
PET-shaped plastic bottles are manufactured with durable, tough, and impact-resistant properties, pet plastic has high gloss characteristics, due to its high waterproofing advantage, PET can be used to make plastic bottles.(See more: PC Bottle )
Application of PET in life
With the above characteristics, what is the application of PET in the current pace of life?
Due to its high waterproofing, PET is often used to make bottles, purified water containers or carbonated soft drinks. In addition, in the production of shaped plastic, with the air permeability and safety at high temperatures, this material is also widely used in the production of PET plastic containers for food containers that are widely used in kitchen design. In addition, this line of materials is also widely used in weaving, food, medical, paper machinery, .... and industries.
