HDPE Polyethylene is the most basic polymer structure and also one of the most adaptable. It is made up of simply CH2 in repeating units, but differences in molecular weight (MW), MW distribution, branching, and co-monomer inclusion can result in a wide range of compounds. MW variations can have an impact on processing: extremely high MW is not melt processable. Long or short chain branching reduces crystallinity and results in a lower Young's Modulus, reduced density, and better ductility. HDPE has the highest density and a relatively high Young's Modulus due to its minimal degree of branching and strong crystallinity. HDPE is a popular building material.( See more: HDPE Blowing Grade )
Because of their ductility, chemical resistance, and food safety, many PE grades are FDA certified.
The overall production volume of all PE kinds is the highest of any polymer, and HDPE is one of the least expensive.( See more: HDPE Film Roll )
Specific characteristics
0.94 - 0.97 g/cm3 density
Mechanical features include a Young's Modulus ranging from 600 to 1500 MPa. Outstanding ductility.
Thermal properties: Tm between 120 and 130 °C. Tg < -100 °C.
Chemical resistance: Excellent acid and basic resistance, as well as good resistance to most organic compounds. It can, however, be dissolved in aromatic and chlorinated solvents at high temperatures.( See more: HIPS Recycled Pellets )
Color/surface
Translucent, with the ability to be colored in any color.
Processing
Processability is excellent with injection molding, blow molding, rotomolding, and extrusion. Shrinkage is relatively high because of the high crystallinity. Because of the low surface energy, painting and gluing are challenging.( See more: HDPE Drum Regrind )
Although several glues for PE are available, welding is the best method for connecting. After surface treatments, printing and painting are possible.
Applications
- Industry: Industrial fluid handling and storage pipes and valves
- Chemical jars, pots, and tanks, as well as trash containers
- Infrastructure: water and waste water pipes, gas pipelines, oil transportation pipelines, geomembranes.
- Food industry: blow-molded beverage containers, lids and caps, chopping boards, and boxes.
- Automotive industry: gasoline tanks and filling pipes
- House/garden: garbage containers, pipes, ponds, and wood decking from HDPE-based wood-polymer composites.
