What is LDPE?
Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a type of material suitable for the molding processes for thermoplastic mold processing and good mold-making capabilities.( see more: ldpe pellets )
LDPE is broadly used to produce different types of tubes, containers, wash bottles, plastic bags, and various laboratory equipment. Its most common application is in making plastic bags.
Because it is fairly translucent, durable, and flexible, this type of plastic is frequently used in film applications. It's also applied in the production of various lids and flexible bottles, as well as cable and wire applications.( see more: ldpe plastic film scrap )
It is tough, flexible, and relatively transparent, thus LDPE is primarily used in the film.
What is LLDPE?
Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is the latest member of the polyethylene family. LLDPE is a copolymer made out of the polymerization of ethylene with a range of alpha olefins; the most common being 1-butene and 1- hexene.
This versatile and cost-effective product can be used over a wide range of flexible film applications offering an optimal balance of toughness and stiffness.
Applications for LLDPE are wide and flexible applications including performance films, bags, wraps, agricultural films, pond liners, and membranes. Rigid products include toys, lids, caps, and closures as well as irrigation pipes and Roto molded tanks.
Properties LDPE/LLDPE
- Have significant chemical resistance.
- Not very easy to bond.
- Be translucent in appearance, as a result of the crystallinity. However, very thin foils can be transparent.
- Be able to undergo significant elongation before breakage, sufficiently malleable and elastic.
- Be fairly puncture-resistant, between -40 C to 90 C.
- Have a sufficient moisture barrier.
- Its oxygen barrier is low.
- Be a flammable material.
- Soften at a relatively low temperature of approximately 100°C.
- Undergoe high thermal expansion.
- Weathering resistance is not very good.
- Have food-grades available as well.
Properties LLDPE
Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) is a low-density type polymer with a density between about 0.915 and 0.930 g/cm3 and a certain amount of short chain branches.
The properties of LLDPE are:
- Flexibility with high impact strength
- Translucency and natural milky color
- Good chemical resistance
- Alcohol barrier properties and good water vapor
- Good stress crack and impact resistance
Application of LDPE/LLDPE plastic
*Application of LDPE
LDPE is commonly seen to be transparent or white, and is used to package bakery goods, as well as caps, protective packaging, shrink wrap, and general-purpose containers such as ‘squeeze bottles’. The increase in demand for clear or ‘natural’ packaging in the food and FMCG market is set to mean the market for LDPE will experience large growth.( see more: ldpe recycled )
It is often used in corrosion-resistant worktop surfaces and molded equipment to be used in laboratories because of LDPE’s chemical-resistant properties.
It is light durable, weight, heat resistance, and weatherproof characteristics make LDPE a great material to be used for play equipment, such as playground slides.
LDPE plastics are used for many different purposes because of many great benefits, such as their resistance to most chemicals, their impact strength, and the relatively inexpensive cost to produce them.
*Application of LLDPE
Because of its flexibility and toughness, Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is used in films and packaging. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is typically less flexible and translucent than LDPE. It has better chemical resistance, stiffness, and strength than LDPE because of its higher crystallinity.
Some of the most famous grades of LLDPE are as followed:
- Film
- Injection molding
- Rotomolding
- Stretched tape
- Monofilament
- Yarn and caps and closure
LLDPE is produced in the form of granules or powder, and different kinds of additives, such as anti-block agents, antioxidants, and UV stabilizers, are usually added to them.( see more: ldpe scrap )
