What is LDPE?
Low-density Polyethylene or LDPE is soft, lightweight, tough, and flexible in its nature and belongs to the Polyethylene branch of thermoplastics. LDPE is obtained from petroleum. The thermoplastic material is also famous for having low-temperature compatibility and good corrosion resistance. The polymer also possesses impact resistance and good chemical properties which makes it easy to fabricate or process. Its melting point is 110°C.( see more: LDPE Agriculture Film )
It is often used in applications where structural strength and stiffness are important requirements because it has more branched out in its structure rather than being in perfect rows, and that is the reason for its low density/volume.
Their names can figure out the major distinction between LDPE and HDPE, which means that the former has more mass than its volume.( see more: ldpe bales plastic scrap )
LDPE is primarily used in film applications - according to the American Chemistry Council (ACC) because it is tough, flexible, and relatively transparent. LDPE is also applied to produce some flexible lids and bottles as well as in wire and cable applications.
Properties LDPE
Low-Density Polyethylene is noted for low-temperature flexibility, toughness, and corrosion resistance. It is not suitable for products where stiffness, high-temperature resistance, and structural strength are required. LDPE (low-density polyethylene) is a flexible, lightweight, and soft plastic material.
LDPE comes with a wide range of properties and is easy to fabricate and form, and has good chemical and impact resistance. It is frequently used for orthotics and prosthetics. Below are the main attributes:
Great resistance to alcohols, acids, and dilute alkalis
Fantastic electrical insulating properties
Meager water absorption
High impact strength at low temperature
Decent weatherability
Good processability as compared to price (inexpensive)
Density: 0.910–0.940 g/cm3
Meager resistance to mineral oils, halogenated and aromatic hydrocarbons, and oxidizing agents
Normal temperature resistance – 80°C continuously and 95°C for shorter times.
Application of LDPE plastic
LDPE is strong enough to be almost unbreakable and is used to make many thin, flexible products like plastic bags for dry-cleaning, newspapers, bread, frozen foods, fresh produce, and garbage. Most shrink-wrap and stretch film is also made out of LDPE, as well as coatings for paper milk cartons and disposable beverage cups. Manufacturers also use LDPE to create thin container lids, squeezable bottles, and some toys.... Here are some of the major applications:
Packaging Applications: Pertaining to LDPE material’s inexpensiveness and good flexibility, it is extensively used in plastic packaging applications for both consumer and industrial divisions – lunch boxes, squeeze bottles, liners, trash bags, pharmaceutical packaging, laminations, food packaging films, etc.
Consumer Goods: Agriculture films used for packaging and storing all sorts of agriculture products, flexible and lightweight toys, housewares, etc.
Pipes & Fittings: Low water absorption and lightweight properties make LDPE the go-to thermoplastic for water-related applications. Example – water pipes, hoses, etc.
Wires & Cables: Good electrical properties make low-density polyethylene a prime choice for manufacturing cable jacketing & coatings and sub-consumer insulators.
The more rigid form of LDPE is easier to recycle and is provided for curbside collection by a growing number of councils. ( see more: LDPE Film Grade Mix Color )
